Background of the study
Safety training in the construction industry is critical due to the high-risk nature of construction work. Traditional safety training methods, often involving classroom instruction and on-site drills, may not adequately prepare workers for real-world hazards. Virtual Reality (VR)-based safety training provides an immersive, interactive environment where construction workers can experience simulated hazard scenarios without the associated risks (Adeola, 2023). In Abuja, FCT, construction companies are increasingly exploring VR training to improve worker safety, enhance hazard recognition, and reduce accident rates. VR training modules can simulate various emergency situations—such as falls, equipment malfunctions, and fire outbreaks—allowing workers to practice appropriate responses in a safe, controlled environment. The technology also provides real-time feedback and performance analytics, enabling trainers to identify areas for improvement and tailor training programs to individual needs (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite its potential, the adoption of VR-based safety training faces challenges such as high equipment costs, technical complexity, and the need for employee adaptation to virtual environments. This study aims to investigate the impact of VR-based safety training on reducing accidents and improving safety protocols in construction companies in Abuja, evaluate its effectiveness, and propose strategies for optimizing its implementation (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Construction companies in Abuja face persistent safety challenges that result in high rates of workplace injuries and fatalities. Traditional safety training methods have proven inadequate in preparing workers for the diverse hazards encountered on construction sites. Although VR-based safety training offers a promising alternative by providing immersive, experiential learning environments, its implementation is hindered by factors such as high initial investment, technical issues related to VR hardware and software, and resistance from workers unfamiliar with digital training modalities. These challenges reduce the overall effectiveness of safety training programs, leading to suboptimal risk management and increased accident rates. This study seeks to assess the impact of VR-based safety training on construction site safety, identify key technical and operational barriers, and propose strategies to enhance the adoption and effectiveness of VR training in the construction industry (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of VR-based safety training in reducing construction site accidents.

  2. To identify technical and operational challenges in VR training implementation.

  3. To propose strategies for optimizing VR-based safety training in construction companies.

Research questions

  1. How does VR-based safety training affect accident rates and worker safety?

  2. What are the main technical and operational challenges in implementing VR training?

  3. How can these challenges be addressed to improve training outcomes?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the potential of VR to transform safety training in the construction industry, potentially reducing workplace accidents and improving worker preparedness. The findings will aid construction companies and regulatory bodies in adopting more effective safety training practices (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to VR-based safety training implementations in construction companies in Abuja, FCT. Limitations include high equipment costs, technical complexities, and variability in user adaptation.

Definitions of terms

  • Virtual Reality (VR): An immersive digital environment that simulates real-world scenarios.

  • Safety Training: Programs designed to educate workers on hazard recognition and risk mitigation.
